Idle well, untapped potential?
Operators are reconsidering the growing role of dormant wells in energy security strategies.

For anyone tracking recent global events, the amplified discussions around energy security and the reliability of global energy supply chains will come as no surprise. Geopolitical shifts have historically driven sector-wide discourse and decision making, and 2026 has proven no different. From renewed interest in Venezuela’ s production potential to concerns about regional conflicts and the security of key shipping routes, governments and operators are increasingly evaluating how impending energy needs should be addressed in the near term.
Much of the conversation has naturally focused on future development and new production, but there is another growing opportunity attracting increased attention across the sector: the value in existing assets.
Around the world, operators are increasingly revisiting mature, dormant, or underutilized wells to determine whether additional production can be recovered from infrastructure that is already in place. In many cases, idle wells may represent a significant opportunity – but only if their condition is properly understood.
